On March 5, 2026, CFR Călători successfully received the final interregional electric train, known as the Coradia Stream – TS13, at the Alstom Depot in Bucharest. This train is a significant part of a larger contract for the procurement of 37 electric multiple units designed to enhance regional connectivity. Its unconventional numbering stems from the fact that the first train in the series was not delivered. The introduction of these new trains is aimed at improving transportation links between major cities, particularly connecting Bucharest with important urban centers such as Constanța, Craiova, and Timișoara.
The overarching goal of this initiative is to reduce travel times and enhance service quality for passengers. The total value of the project is estimated at 1.7 billion lei and is being carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport. This effort is further supported by European funding, sourced from two operational programs, with a stipulated implementation period of 24 months.
Incorporating advanced technology and modern design, the Coradia Stream trains promise improved comfort, efficiency, and reliability for travelers. Their sleek and contemporary design is not only visually appealing but also incorporates sustainable practices, aligning with broader environmental goals within the transportation sector. The trains are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities aimed at providing a pleasant travel experience, reflecting CFR Călători’s commitment to modernizing Romania’s railway services.
The significance of this project extends beyond mere transportation improvements. By connecting the capital to key cities, these trains are expected to stimulate both local economies and tourism, making travel more accessible for residents and visitors alike. Improved rail services can lead to increased passenger numbers, fostering a shift from road to rail travel, which is generally more environmentally friendly.
The financing model under which this project operates demonstrates a collaborative approach to infrastructure development, pooling resources from both national and European sources. This strategic partnership not only signifies a commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure but also showcases Romania’s capability to manage large-scale transport projects.
The Coradia Stream trains embody a forward-looking vision for Romania’s rail network, reflecting ongoing investments in high-quality public transport solutions. As these trains are gradually introduced into service, passengers can anticipate a significant enhancement in their travel experience, characterized by reduced delays and modern amenities that promote comfort and efficiency.
In summary, the completion of the Coradia Stream fleet represents a crucial step towards modernizing the rail system in Romania, with the anticipated benefits of quicker travel times and improved service. The project’s successful execution will not only enhance intercity connectivity but also contribute to the region’s economic growth and environmental sustainability. With the support of the Ministry of Transport and European financial backing, this initiative marks a new chapter in Romania’s public transport landscape, paving the way for future advancements in rail transport and infrastructure development.
