On October 27, 2025, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) will unveil a commemorative coin made of copper tombac to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the birth of renowned Romanian poet Lucian Blaga. This special edition coin will feature a variety of significant designs and inscriptions that pay homage to Blaga’s legacy.
The obverse (front) side of the coin will showcase the impressive façade of the „Babeș-Bolyai” University located in Cluj-Napoca, a city that holds a deep connection to Blaga’s life and work. Accompanying this image will be the inscription „ROMANIA,” the nominal value of „1 LEU,” the coat of arms of Romania, and the year of issue, marking this significant occasion in Romanian cultural history.
On the reverse (back) side, the design will prominently display Lucian Blaga’s name, alongside the years of his life—1895 to 1961—signifying his contributions to Romanian literature and thought during those pivotal decades. This coin is intended not only as a collector’s item but also as a means to educate the public about Blaga’s work and influence in the fields of poetry, philosophy, and cultural critique.
In terms of production, the BNR has set a limit, producing a maximum of 5,000 pieces. Each coin will be carefully packaged in acrylic capsules and presented in special brochures that further detail the significance of Lucian Blaga and the artistic elements of the coin. The retail price for the coin will be set at 260 RON, exclusive of VAT, making it an accessible yet valuable collector’s piece.
This issuance is part of the BNR’s recent efforts to honor prominent figures and significant anniversaries in the nation’s history. Previous coin releases have included tributes to other cultural icons, such as the esteemed writer Marin Preda, as well as commemorative coins celebrating Romania’s membership in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
The coin will not only serve as a tribute to Blaga’s literary contributions but also hold a function as legal tender within Romania. It will be available for purchase through the regional branches of BNR, allowing both collectors and those interested in Romanian culture to acquire a piece of history.
The decision to launch a coin dedicated to Lucian Blaga emphasizes the importance of cultural heritage and the role of collective memory in national identity. As Romania continues to evolve, commemorating such figures underscores the lasting impact of their work on society. In doing so, the BNR reinforces the connection between currency and culture, showcasing not merely monetary value but also the stories and contributions behind each coin.
For enthusiasts of Romanian history, literature, and numismatics, this commemorative coin is likely to be a sought-after collectible. It stands as a reminder of Lucian Blaga’s enduring legacy and the rich cultural tapestry of Romania that he helped to weave. Whether displayed prominently in a collection or kept as a historical token, the coin promises to be a cherished piece for generations to come.
