The National Company for Road Investments (CNIR) has announced the appointment of a contractor for the final segment of the Union Motorway. This stretch spans 15.5 kilometers and has a contract value of approximately 3.57 billion lei, excluding VAT.
This ambitious project is set to unfold over nearly four years and will involve the construction of numerous critical infrastructure components. Specifically, it will feature the erection of 14 bridges and overpasses, as well as two tunnels, one of which will measure an impressive 1,760 meters in length. Additionally, the construction plan includes the development of two road interchanges, enhancing connectivity in the region. The winning bid has been awarded to a consortium of Italian companies led by ITINERA SPA, with the stipulated duration for the entire project set for 46 months—consisting of 10 months dedicated to design and 36 months for actual construction.
The Union Motorway project is particularly significant as it represents the first motorway to cross the Prut River, extending into the Republic of Moldova. A key part of the venture involves a 5-kilometer segment situated within Moldovan territory. This prioritized segment is designed to establish a crucial linkage between the Golăiești interchange and the Prut River Bridge at Ungheni, thereby facilitating improved transportation routes for both countries.
